The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is a law that sets out a process for developing and enforcing accessibility standards.


Accessibility standards are laws that government, businesses, non-profits and public sector organizations must follow to become more accessible.


5 Areas of Accessibility in Ontario


Customer Service Standard - This standard helps remove barriers for people with disabilities so they can access goods, services or facilities.


Information and Communications Standard - This standard helps organizations make their information accessible to people with disabilities.


Transportation Standard - This standard makes it easier for everyone to travel in the province.


Employment Standard - This standard helps make hiring and employee support practices more accessible.


Design of Public Spaces - This standard helps organizations make new and redeveloped outdoor public areas accessible.



Actions Required by Employers of 50+ Employees in Ontario


  • Create Accessibility Policy (referred to as Accessibility Program)

  • Create a Multi-Year Plan

  • Train your staff and volunteers

  • Plan for Accessible self-service spaces - Not Applicable for HD Protection Services as services are provided on customer premises and as such the responsibility of the customer

  • Provide Accessible customer service - Provided on customer premises

  • Implement Accessible employment practices - Section 5 of Accessibility Program

  • Provide Accessible Information 

  • Public Website Accessible

  • Create Accessible Public Spaces - Not Applicable for HD Protection Services
